Contemporary
Contemporary homes draw influence from a wide variety of design movements ranging from the traditional to the post-modern, they are also unique in that they are shaped by current trends and pop-culture.
They connect indoors and outdoors, but contemporary homes tend to emphasize energy efficiency, sustainable materials, lots of natural light and the use of recycled non-toxic materials.
Anglesea House
The home sits prominently on a corner block and is certainly a head turner with light bright spaces, and with a large-vaulted ceiling to the main area the owner wanted an ultra-modern kitchen with polished concrete floors; with delineation between the bedrooms with the master bedroom at the front of the home; guests would have their own space to the rear of the home and then a central communal area.
The Postage Stamp House
An inner Sydney house built on a small and difficult site, uses solar passive design and ‘Passive House’ principles to achieve a comfortable and compact home. The homeowners bought the parcel of land with pre-approved house designs, so there was little scope for changing the design of the home. Siting the house to take advantage of solar passive heating and cooling was difficult but achievable.
The 10 Star Home
Winner of the Carbon Neutral Adelaide ‘Leadership and Influence’ award in 2020, this contemporary 10 Star Home uses the latest technology and innovation including roof, walls, windows and floor construction methods and materials to reduce energy consumption.
Rainbow House
The Rainbow House by Lighthouse Architecture and Design underwent a knockdown rebuild, a decision fueled by the clients’ desire to maximize the use of Canberra’s abundant sunshine. Jenny Edwards, the Energy Efficiency Champion of 2023, explained, “The existing house didn’t make good use of the beautiful sunshine we can get here in Canberra that we need to soak up over winter.” The focus was on harnessing the northern and eastern light to create an interesting and energy efficient home.
Mid-century Modern
Mid-century modern homes typically feature organic shapes, clean lines, pared-back interiors and easy-to-live-in layouts. The fabrications are generally simple, such as concrete, timber, and steel.
The Honeyworks House
A single, detached house was demolished and rebuilt, aiming for a mid-century style home that looked comfortable in the suburb surrounded by homes with similar motifs, brickwork and detailing. Designed by Paul Butterworth, the Principal Architect from Paul Butterworth Architects.
A Light Filled Sanctuary
A Brisbane family approached TONIC Architecture and Design to create a home that would work for their growing family; that was functional and filled with light and ventilation, capturing views while maintaining privacy.
The family did not want to lose the elements of the existing house they liked such as the brick and mid-century modern style. They envisaged a renovated home that suited the lifestyle needs of a large busy family – a light filled sanctuary, offering escape for both parents and children whilst surrounded by greenery, trees, and landscaping.
